TripAdvisor/FlipKey Sudden Exit Leaves Hawaii Travelers in Limbo

TripAdvisor has announced it will shut down its vacation rental services, including FlipKey, on November 1, 2024. All existing reservations are now canceled, leaving travelers and property owners scrambling. FlipKey, a key player in Hawaii’s rental market since 2007, had been an alternative to Airbnb and VRBO, offering family-friendly and luxury rentals.

With no availability after October 2024, travelers must find new accommodations, likely at higher costs. Property owners face sudden vacancies but may raise prices. TripAdvisor will not assist with any rebooking issues, leaving both travelers and owners to adjust. This change adds to Hawaii’s already complex rental landscape amid evolving regulations and concerns over over-tourism.
